"Quilt as Desired"

I've heard this euphemism ever since I started quilting.  It pertains to the actual decorative top stitching which holds together the three quilt layers (top, batting, back).  Which can be something as simple as cross hatching over the entire quilt, or very fanciful feathers and curls.

When I use the term "quilt as desired" I refer to the way you want to design your quilt top. Forget about what's trending in the magazines or quilt shows, or whether the quilt will match the furnishings.  Make your quilts with fabrics and designs that call out to you, make you smile, or will be enjoyed by the recipient because you know that they would adore, as in this example, a cat-themed quilt.

I once made a valentine themed log-cabin hearts quilt in pinks and creams, from fabric I inherited from a quilter.  I asked my brother if his wife would like it even thought it doesn't match ANYTHING in their decor, which is very traditional in autumn colors.  My brother said "absolutely."  It turns out that my sister-in-law loves the "love" in the quilt, and is a closet lover of all things pink--she just doesn't decorate her home with the color.  She pulls it out of a big "blanket" basket next to the sofa whenever she catches a chill while curled up watching TV.
